In 2026, Palm Sunday is March 29. The Manhattan Symphony Orchestra has a concert scheduled that day and most of the Messiah Orchestra members play in the Manhattan Symphony. Spring break for K-State is the two weekends before Palm Sunday.
Due to both of those conflicts, the Messiah Steering Committee has voted to change the Messiah concert date to Sunday, March 8, 2026, at 2:00 PM in the Wamego First United Methodist Church sanctuary.
The following are rehearsal dates starting in January, 2026.
January 4, 11, 18, 25
February 1, 8, 15
February 22 (With orchestra) 2:00-5:00
March 1 (With orchestra) 2:00-5:00
March 8 concert at 2:00
On February 22 and March 1, the chorus is asked to report at 1:30 to warm up before we rehearse with the orchestra. The combined chorus and orchestra rehearsals can last until 5:00 pm.
Chorus History
The Flint Hills Messiah Chorus and Chamber Orchestra traces its roots to the late 1980's when the KANZA conference of the United Methodist Church organized an ecumenical performance of "Messiah" three times. In 1991, the Wamego Council of Churches and a steering committee of volunteers from the area took the reins of the organization and named it "The Flint Hills Messiah Chorus."
The all volunteer chorus has gathered each year since, except 2000, 2020, 2021, and 2022 to perform portions of "Messiah" during the Easter season.
An organist and pianist accompanied the chorus in the early years. In 1998, the chamber orchestra was added to the performance. The instruments include violin, viola, cello, flute, trombone, bassoon, French horn, piccolo trumpet, trumpet, keyboard, timpani, oboe and clarinet. In order to have an orchestra, the choir members seek to raise funds each year to pay the musicians of this 21-piece chamber orchestra. The Flint Hills Messiah Chorus is a 501 (c) 3 organization. All donations are tax-deductible. Our mailing address is 2202 Grandview Drive, Wamego, KS, 66547.
Over the years, talented people have given countless hours in practicing and organizing this performance. It is truly a labor of love. We hope that you can hear it in our voices and our instruments as we perform this timeless work for you.
We have started a tradition in Northeast Kansas that we hope to continue for years to come.
